What if everything we think we know about addiction is only part of the picture?
Gregory Bateson, one of the most radical thinkers of the 20th century argued that the relationships between parts matter more than the parts themselves. Our whole way of thinking, he said, has got to be reimagined from the inside out.
Dr. Wes Robins took that seriously. In his book The Hand of Addiction he builds on Bateson’s insight to map addiction across five dimensions:
biological,
psychological,
sociocultural,
developmental, and
spiritual
and asks what changes when we finally stop treating people as broken and start treating them as whole.
-
Wes brings his own story too, six years of addiction, a recovery built through music, art, and hard self-work, and two decades since of working with people the system had largely given up on. His vision of recovery goes beyond getting sober. It’s about transformation, understanding what addiction was trying to tell you all along.
